The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog has told the environment ministry that renewable sources can make up at least 15% of India’s energy mix by 2030 if present policies are given a push. This analysis was done as part of the government’s strategy to enumerate India’s climate action plan to be submitted to United Nations.

The UP forest department has achieved a feat of sorts, meeting a target set by the Supreme Court and planting 6.2 lakh saplings in Agra and five adjoining districts over the past three months. Officials however admit that the far tougher task would be to ensure that these saplings live and grow into trees.

"This year, we have done three things - more sewage treatment plants and new technology, new rules of waste management - solid waste, e-waste, plastic waste, hazardous waste, bio-medical waste and construction waste. All rules have been changed and new technology has been brought in and the base has been widened. These are the real efforts to make India clean," Javadekar said in his message.

Indian writer Raju Thomas observed shortly after Mrs Gandhi’s trip that, “nor has the long-term energy question been resolved for India … Its known oil reserves are low … there are various limitations on the extensive use of coal … the promise of nuclear energy continues to draw the attention”. The same could be written today, with a passing mention of gas and renewable energy.

Union environment ministry, which generally avoids sharing details of air pollution-linked deaths, made an exception on Thursday when it said in Parliament that more than 35,000 people had died due to acute respiratory infections (ARI) across India in close to 10 years. More than 2.6 crore cases were reported every year during the period.
